NBA Trade Rumors: Phoenix Suns Shut Down Devin Booker Trade Rumors Amid Offseason Uncertainty
As the Phoenix Suns navigate a disappointing season despite their NBA-high $366.6 million payroll and luxury tax, one thing remains clear—Devin Booker isn’t going anywhere.
In response to trade speculation, Suns governor Mat Ishbia made his stance unequivocally clear to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon:
"A Devin Booker trade will never happen."
Houston Rockets’ Interest in Booker Sparks Trade Rumors.
The Houston Rockets have reportedly been eyeing Booker for some time. MacMahon noted that Houston has "repeatedly expressed" interest, but despite holding valuable young assets and draft picks, they didn’t make a major move before the NBA trade deadline.
Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix reported that the Rockets were taking a disciplined approach to roster moves, with one league executive stating:
"Unless you are calling them about Booker, they are not interested."
However, Booker has shown zero interest in leaving Phoenix, where he has played since being drafted 13th overall in 2015. He reaffirmed his commitment to the franchise, emphasizing the pride he takes in being the face of the Suns:
"I take pride in the community in Phoenix, the people that have supported me since I was 18 when things were ugly. [...] We just fell short of accomplishing what we want. So I want to do it, and I want to do it here. That's the responsibility of being a franchise player, and I wear that with honor."
Kevin Durant’s Future in Phoenix Looks Uncertain
While Booker’s future with the Suns is secure, the same can’t be said for Kevin Durant. The franchise reportedly explored trade possibilities involving the two-time NBA Finals MVP, but a potential deal with the Golden State Warriors fell through because Durant didn’t want to leave.
According to Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic, Durant’s camp was "upset" that Phoenix even engaged in trade talks, creating tensions that make it "hard to see him staying in Phoenix beyond this season."
At 37 years old by next season, with one year and $54.7 million remaining on his contract, Durant is the more logical trade piece if the Suns look to shake things up this summer.
What’s Next for the Suns?
With a 30-36 record and sitting 2.5 games out of the No. 10 seed, the Suns must make significant roster changes. Their massive financial commitments are not translating into success, making it clear that adjustments are necessary.
However, trading a 28-year-old superstar like Booker, who is fully committed to Phoenix, would only set the franchise back further. Instead, offseason moves should focus on building a more balanced, competitive roster around him.
As the NBA offseason approaches, all eyes will be on the Suns. Will they reshape the team around Booker? Or will they move on from Durant in search of a fresh start?
