NBA Trade Rumors: The Golden State Warriors and Philadelphia 76ers' last-minute trade could save both teams from dire circumstances
The Warriors may revisit their interest in Paul George from the offseason.
Paul George intended to play for the Golden State Warriors before agreeing to a four-year, $212 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. Even a trade agreement with the Los Angeles Clippers was in place, but the Dubs were unwilling to give up Jonathan Kuminga. After those negotiations broke down, George turned to a new agreement in Philadelphia.
For a few months, that was all she published about the Warriors' interest in George. Now, Golden State has been connected to the All-Star wing once more as the trade deadline of February 6 approaches.
George has had a difficult start to his time in Philadelphia, and the Warriors are still in dire need of an impact player to complement Stephen Curry.
Since joining the Sixers, George's value has decreased, which may provide Mike Dunleavy Jr. and the Dubs front staff more opportunities. Although Daryl Morey has a reputation for being frugal with his stars, a move is still possible if George's deal is internally seen as a liability, which it most likely should be.
According to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Golden State has called to inquire about George's availability.
Both sides of this argument make sense. The 76ers would be better suited concentrating on Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, while the Warriors are running out of choices to make the most of Curry's last years. This is the possible outcome of a trade.
Sixers supporters shouldn't get too excited, although it is likely that Philadelphia would also receive some draft capital. Although the Dubs might add a first-round pick, moving George would no longer yield a wealth of long-term assets. In essence, Golden State is prepared to forgo more flexible contracts in order to take a chance on George's $212 million contract. That's what this trade is all about.
This simply gives the Sixers additional options for moving the roster around Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid. Given how little George has actually been on the court this season, it should also provide a pleasant short-term lift.
Despite all the criticism he rightfully receives, Andrew Wiggins remains a reliable two-way rotational wing. There is a personal connection because he was Embiid's teammate at Kansas. In addition to giving Philly another reliable ball handler to complement Tyrese Maxey, who has been a liability since Jared McCain's injury, Dennis Schroder increases the backup point guard's playing time. Kevon Looney is a good backup five, which is something Philadelphia has far too frequently lacked.
Gary Payton is also capable of providing reliable wing time. George's four rotation pieces and extra change? It's a sensible, albeit uninspired, exchange.
From the start, Golden State got the star wing it desired. Before his most recent injury setback, George was beginning to turn around. He still has great scoring ability and is a strong wing defender. In addition to Stephen Curry, the Warriors need another player to contribute to the halfcourt offense. George is able to comply. Golden State's window is now, danger be damned, even though the contract's risk is evident.
