Dirk Nowitzki reaction to Luka Doncic trade in Los Angeles Lakers

NBA Rumors: Dirk Nowitzki first reaction to Luka Doncic trade in Los Angeles Lakers

Saying that the Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis trade between the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks was the most shocking and significant move in league history is neither hyperbole nor overstatement.  To locate a move of that size, you may need to go back to the Lakers' trade for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.  According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Mavericks great and Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki recently recollected his first thoughts after learning of the Luka Doncic trade.

When Dirk Nowitzki first heard about the Luka Doncic deal, he was abroad with his family and claimed to be "as shocked and surprised as everybody else."  Additionally, Nowitzki expressed his disappointment and sadness for Doncic.

Additionally, he disclosed that he received an invitation at Doncic's request to attend Doncic's Lakers debut game against the Utah Jazz on February 10.

Following the transaction, Mavericks supporters demonstrated outside the arena in honor of Anthony Davis's franchise debut.  The Mavericks fan base has responded favorably to the move, which makes sense.  Doncic was expected to follow in Nowitzki's footsteps as the team's next great player.

Nowitzki spent his whole playing career with the Mavericks, helping them win the 2011 championship and make two trips to the NBA Finals.  This past season, Doncic had just guided the squad to the NBA Finals.

Davis has appeared in one game for the Mavericks thus far, while Doncic has participated in three for the Lakers.  Davis is out indefinitely due to an adductor injury, and Doncic is still getting back into the swing of the game after missing Christmas Day.

The outcome of the Mavericks-Lakers deal is still up in the air, but it will likely take some time before the team regains the confidence of its supporters.
