NBA Trade Rumors: Charlotte Hornets May Revisit Mark Williams Trade Talks in Offseason After Failed Lakers Deal
The Charlotte Hornets could once again explore trading center Mark Williams this offseason after a previously agreed-upon deal with the Los Angeles Lakers fell through at the trade deadline, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
Hornets Nearly Traded Williams to Lakers
Last month, the Hornets reportedly agreed to send Williams to the Lakers in exchange for rookie guard Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, a 2031 first-round pick, and a 2030 pick swap. However, the trade was rescinded just days later after Williams failed his physical exam, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. As a result, all players involved returned to their original teams, and Williams remained in Charlotte for the remainder of the season.
Williams’ Strong Play Since Returning
Since rejoining the Hornets, the 7-footer has continued to showcase his talent. Over the past 12 games, he has averaged 15.0 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.3 blocks while shooting an efficient 60.8% from the field.
Despite missing the first 20 games of the season due to injury, Williams is in the midst of a career-best campaign, posting season averages of 15.4 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game.
Durability Concerns Cloud Williams’ Future in Charlotte
While Williams has been highly productive on a per-minute basis, his injury history remains a major concern. The former No. 15 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft has struggled to stay on the court, appearing in just:
- 43 games as a rookie
- 19 games in his second season
- 35 games so far in 2024-25
Given that history, Charlotte’s willingness to include him in trade talks suggests the front office may have doubts about his long-term reliability.
Will the Hornets Revisit Trade Talks?
Although Williams is just 23 years old and could be a key piece for a rebuilding Hornets team, his previous inclusion in trade discussions raises questions about his future with the franchise.
If Charlotte ultimately decides to make Williams available again in the offseason, expect plenty of interest from teams looking for a young, high-upside big man who can impact both ends of the floor—if he can stay healthy.
Stay tuned as the Hornets weigh their options heading into the summer.
