Despite a flurry of trade speculation earlier this offseason, it appears LeBron James is staying with the Los Angeles Lakers—at least for now.

According to Zach Lowe of The Ringer, the noise surrounding a possible LeBron James trade has noticeably quieted in recent weeks. Speaking on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Lowe explained that the once-heated rumors have lost momentum since the buzz during NBA Summer League.

“LeBron’s on the Lakers. I’ve heard it’s kind of gotten quiet now after it was the talk of Summer League,” Lowe said. “There doesn’t seem to be a clean solution either way… Everyone’s saying we should expect them to be on the Lakers. That’s my expectation.”

Still, Lowe acknowledged the possibility of a surprising midseason trade, even suggesting hypothetical scenarios involving teams like the Miami Heat or packages including Andrew Wiggins and Norman Powell if LeBron were to become disgruntled.

LeBron Focused on Competing for a Title

James' agent, Rich Paul, provided clarity on the 40-year-old’s mindset after he opted into his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 NBA season. Speaking to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Paul said:

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future… but he values a realistic chance of winning it all.”

Paul also confirmed that four teams reached out with interest in acquiring the NBA’s all-time leading scorer following his decision.

No Trade Expected Before Training Camp

While trade buzz surrounding James has created waves this summer, it's unlikely any deal happens before training camp. On July 17, Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reported that the league-wide expectation is for James to remain on the Lakers' roster entering the 2025-26 season.

James is coming off a stellar 2024-25 campaign in which he averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game while shooting 51.3% from the field, including 37.6% from three.

Now entering his 23rd NBA season, LeBron continues to defy age-related expectations. And while trade rumors will always surround a player of his magnitude, for now, the King remains in Los Angeles, aiming for one more championship run with the purple and gold.
