NBA Trade Rumors: JJ Redick Signs Two-Year, $45M Extension as Lakers Head Coach

The Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly given head coach JJ Redick a two-year contract extension, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports, bringing the total value of his deal to $45 million and keeping him under contract through the 2029-30 season.

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka praised Redick, saying, “We think he's a special coach with a special voice that's really helping us define the culture of Lakers excellence. We just wanted to make a clear statement that this is what we believe in, what we're going to lean into, and what our players are going to mold into as we continue to develop the identity.”

Redick, who played 15 seasons in the NBA from 2006-21 before becoming an ESPN analyst, was hired as the Lakers’ head coach in June 2024 despite having no prior head coaching experience in college or the NBA. His first season was a success, as Los Angeles finished 50-32 and secured a playoff spot, though they fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round.

During that season, Redick managed a roster that saw major turnover, including the blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis to Dallas in exchange for Luka Dončić.

Looking ahead to the 2025-26 season, Redick will lead a revamped Lakers team featuring stars Luka Dončić and LeBron James, along with new additions Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, and Jake LaRavia, as the organization aims for a deeper postseason run.
